Scores of Palestinian delegates traded blows and spat at each other as Iraq's deputy prime minister and vice president stared in helpless amazement.
The brawl broke out at a meeting of 500 trade unionists and politicians from Arab states after a Palestinian delegate, who supports Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, took the podium to speak.
The conference was supposed to show support for embattled Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.
A Baghdad conference held to show support for Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, ended in a brawl on Saturday after an argument over whether peace between the Arab world and Israel is a good thing.
The brawl broke out at a meeting of trade unionists and politicians from Arab states.
As a Palestinian delegate took the podium to speak, he was called a spy and shouted down. Pro-Yasser Arafat delegates responded with chants of "Long live Arafat."
Within seconds members from the rival groups were punching each other.
Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan and Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz stood by in bewilderment as other delegates pulled the rivals apart.
Iraqi delegates then began shouting pro-Saddam slogans.
Sections of the Palestinian community have never accepted the Israeli-Palestinian accords of 1993 and 1995, calling Arafat a traitor and accusing him of conceding too much and gaining little.
The division has widened since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office in June 1996, and pursued hard-line policies blamed for the current impasse in the peace process.
Following the conference Iraq repeated its warning to the U-N security council of "grave consequences" if sanctions against Iraq remain in place.
The U-N has signalled a willingness to reconsider the blockage as soon as the U-N weapons inspectors have finished their mission in Iraq.
But Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan said on Saturday that the measures have no weight and no value.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"It is high time that the sanctions should be lifted and the Security Council should meet its commitments."
SUPER CAPTION: Taha Ramadan, Iraqi Vice President
On Friday, Iraq's two top decision-making bodies, the Revolutionary Command Council and the Baa'th Party Command, sent an open letter to the Security Council warning of grave consequences if the U-N does not lift the sanctions.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"In the light of the letter addressed yesterday to the Security Council, the world should know the seriousness of the continuation of the embargo on the Iraqi people."
SUPER CAPTION: Sa'ad Hamoudi, Head of Arab peoples forces
States-run media also broadcast Friday's Iraqi warning to the U-N.
And in the streets, the move was supported by those who have suffered under U-N sanctions.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The letter for the Security Council was a good one, especially for Kofi Annan to know what is going on here in Iraq. The embargo is affecting people especially women and children"
SUPER CAPTION: Mati Amou, Student
Rather than threatening action, Iraq said in its letter that it will wait and see how the Security Council behaves.

(4 Sep 1998) Arabic/Eng/Nat
Syria has reopened its trade centre in Baghdad after a gap of nearly 18 years.
This is the latest sign of growing ties between the two uneasy neighbours.
It follows an agreement last month to re-start a pipeline for Iraqi crude oil that was shut 16 years ago.
Iraq cut ties with Syria in 1981 because of its support of Iran in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.
Here in Baghdad, Iraq's Trade Minister Mohammed Mehdi Saleh at a ceremony with a top-level Syrian delegation.
It's to inaugurate a Syrian trade centre in the Iraqi capital.
This is more evidence of improving ties between the two countries.
Relations between Baghdad and Damascus have long been strained -- they were cut completely in 1981 because Syria was supporting Iran in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
That's now changing fast.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We have made a significant achievement in economic and trade co-operation during the last year and this year and the willingness of the two countries to enlarge bilateral relationships and I think this is a good step."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammed Mehdi Saleh, Iraqi Trade Minister
The main reason is Iraq seeking regional support to counter the U-N-imposed sanctions against it.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"Negotiations are now underway between Iraq and Saudi to conclude contracts to supply Iraq with foodstuffs and medicine under the oil-for-food programme."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammed Mehdi Saleh, Iraqi Trade Minister
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We are here to contribute to the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Iraq."
SUPER CAPTION: Khaled Raad, Syria's head of duty free zones
The delegations briefly toured the centre where Syrian-made clothes, brooms and biscuits were exhibited.
An Iraqi trade centre is expected to open soon in Damascus but no date has been set.

Baghdad is home to 7 million people. This sprawling urban jungle is the second largest city in the Arab world after Cairo. But between the skyscrapers and honking cars you can see remains of this city's magnificent mediaeval past. This once Round City’s walls crumbled long ago. But a thousand years ago brilliant scientists, architects, writers, and merchants of different races and religions made massive contributions to the knowledge of humanity. Back when Paris and London were home to 20,000 people over 1 Million Baghdadi's lived here among canals, libraries, and palm trees.
So what is the history of Baghdad, what’s a House of Wisdom, and what does it all have to do with Mediaeval Robots trying to get people drunk?
This video was researched and written by Deborah Oliveira.
